Lifeline of the Soul

2021 – 2022 / Oil on linen (aluminium stretchers) / 180 x 220 x 2,5 cm

This painting is inspired by breaking points in life, moments that often define the direction you are going to in life. Breaking points are often a consequence of sudden intense occurrences, situations or outbursts in life which can feel as if hit by a thunderbolt. 

On the 30th of November 2021 Van de Graaf wrote a poem inspired by the painting (translated by the artist from the Dutch original)

The dark clouds press,

Drive me to the edge,

from the path.

To break, to break off.

A bolt as necessity,

to save the lifeline of my soul.

Carried by the Light,

letting the clouds dissolve,

To move on into spring which is at once autumn,

I carry on, alone, into the silence of the path.

Only hope,

that the openings of your authentic wisdom,

will give you the genuine eyes, which lead you to my way,

and able us to continue together.

The Poem, Dutch original;

De donkere wolken drukken,

drijven mij naar de rand, 

van het pad.

Te breken, af te breken.

Een schicht als noodzaak,

om de levensader van mijn ziel te redden.

Gedragen door het licht,

dat de wolken op doet lossen,

om door te gaan in de lente die tegelijkertijd de herfst is,

Ga ik verder, alleen, in de stilte van de weg.

Maar hoop,

dat de openingen van je oorspronkelijke wijsheid,

je de oprechte ogen geeft, en je leidt naar mijn weg,

om samen te kunnen vervolgen.
